Our Mission

We aim to improve the quality of life for the disadvantaged community of Kibera by providing quality education, nourishment and healthcare to the children and basic literacy skills to their parents. Our aspirations are that the wider community will benefit from our education program on the principle of each one teach one.

We currently focus on the Kibera slum of Nairobi where more than 800,000 people live in poorest conditions.

Please have a look around our site to read more about the work we currently do at St. Monica nursery school and beyond.

Volunteers Foundation is entirely based on volunteer work and all donations and help received go directly to the charity cause and are not spent on salaries or administration costs.

Please help us make a difference.

Providing education from 2 to 18 years

St. Monica’s Nursery was opened in 2007, in the district of Raila, right in the heart of the Kibera slum, where more than 800,000 people live. This nursery was established to address the ever increasing number of HIV orphans and vulnerable children with poor backgrounds.

Nine courageous women, HIV positive themselves, started the nursery with one voluntary teacher. Since 2010 the nursery has been supported by VF. Today there are three qualified teachers and around 75 children between two and six years, who receive quality education, health checks and nutritious daily meals.

After the age of 6, the children join the VF schooling scheme and continue their education in our Volunteers Foundation Academy and the partnering primary and secondary schools, being sponsored by Families in Europe and not only. As at Jan 2017, there are 125 children between age 6 and 18 in the VF Schooling scheme.

What achieved so far? »

Volunteers Foundation has started its activities with the intention to just provide a brick wall building nursery and a remuneration and training to the teachers in the nursery. Since then the VF reality has mutated and from 80 children in 2010 we do have 200 in 2017 under our “umbrella”. We try to influnce the vast majority of issues that could condition the children education.

Objectives 2017 »

VF aims to help Kibera’s children by providing them with a supportive environment that enables them to grow up in safe and healthy conditions and give them a chance to change their lives.

Plans to 2020 »

Volunteers Foundation is determined on giving all children in its scheme the continuity and the stability that they need in order to properly achieve.
